As a fluid loss control agent, CMC can effectively control water loss. After adding CMC, the drilling fluid can form a high-quality mud cake on the wellbore wall. This mud cake is thin yet tough, with a low permeability coefficient, effectively protecting the wellbore and preventing the penetration and loss of water from the drilling fluid.
Due to its unique molecular structure, CMC products exhibit excellent salt resistance. They can maintain high viscosity and good fluid loss control capabilities in brine, seawater, and saturated saltwater, making CMC frequently used in offshore drilling.
CMC also plays a role in suspending heavy materials in drilling fluids. By increasing the viscosity of the drilling fluid and forming a network structure in the mud, CMC enhances the ability of the drilling fluid to suspend large and heavy particles, preventing stuck pipe incidents.
